Journalism worth looking back on

As a journalism student it's hard not to believe that a story is only as good as it's timelines and as a Millennial journalism student that theory is regularly proved. The need for journalists to compete in a 24-hour news cycle expedited by the fuel of retweets and shares is ever increasing and this often shifts focus to the breaking news of "now".
That's not to say the journalism of the past doesn't still have something to teach us about the breadth and depth of our world's history. They do call journalism the first draft of history, and in my opinion it's often a pretty well done draft.
The list below is ever evolving but will always reflect--again, in my opinion--some of the best journalism of the past decades. I put pieces on this list that I truly believe still have something to share with the audience. Some are useful for the content itself but others weave stories together so beautifully that they're worth reading just for that.
The Chains of Mental Illness in West Africa, Benedict Carey (2015)
